The current wisdom, depending on who you read, is that you have to touch the awareness of a prospect 5, 7 or 19? Times before they will buy a product. 5 -7 times is the most popular, so they have to see you in print or through some other media at least 5 times before they will buy from you.
BUT; something happens when we set up an internet shop, we suddenly expect people to click through from a link or an Adwords campaign and buy from us straight away. The amazing thing is that some people do. But the conversion rate on your web site will be far lower than the conversion rate from a warm sales call, if you make any of those.
So how do we change the game to make it more like the off-line world?
By all means try for the sale, if people want to buy then don’t stand in their way. However, your main goal should be to capture their email address and permission to keep in touch. Then you will find that after a few emails more of the people you contact will come back and buy, your conversion rate will start to improve far beyond the few that bought immediately.
The trick is getting people to agree to be contacted...
